Young & Restless is dropping hints like anvils that what appears to be happening may actually be something else entirely. If so, at least one person has managed to put themselves in grave danger without even realizing what’s about to unfold. As they say, once you see it, you can’t unsee it… and it’s bone-chilling.
Much has been said about Matt Clark’s miraculous transformation from madman to male Mary Poppins, all thanks to a couple of blows to the head courtesy of Sienna. The Young & Restless fanbase became split over the eyebrow-raising choice to seemingly redeem a violent rapist and attempted murderer. Half of SOAPS readers polled remained firm that he should never be redeemed, while the rest wanted to give it a chance or were on the fence about it.
As for whether or not Clark’s remorse was sincere, most Young & Restless viewers assumed it was, considering that the headwriter appeared determined to turn the evil-doer into a romantic lead paired with Phyllis, thereby reuniting Roger Howard with former General Hospital co-star, Michelle Stafford. But we may have been led astray.
If our suspicion is right, Matt Clark is playing the long game. Which means Phyllis has put herself in grave danger at the hands of a veritable maniac without having any idea that she’s in peril. Let us explain.
Matt first allowed the mask to slip when he lost his temper during the recent confrontation with Noah at The Shadow Room. It wasn’t enough to truly signal that he was less-than-reformed, since one could dismiss it as a human reaction to being attacked. But then came another tip off.
After persuading Phyllis to help him remove the ankle monitor, Matt crossed paths with Cane in the foyer of the Athletic Club, and once again, the mask slipped ever so slightly. It seemed a little like a glimpse into the workings behind his mind game when he told Ashby that trying to atone for his past was getting him nowhere, so he was changing his tactics. Clark then cryptically hinted that he planned to “take his life in a whole new direction.” Yeah, concerning.
In Friday’s episode, every move Matt makes suddenly seems like anvils dropping that he’s returned to being the master manipulator Noah keeps warning everyone about. He’s working Sienna, perhaps even driving a wedge between her and Noah, who is frustrated and furious, while controlling Phyllis through her attachment to him. He even gets in Victor’s face, suggesting that he’s becoming increasingly confident that his mind games are working.
Watch for it, and as we teased, once you see it, you can’t unsee it. Phyllis, we’re certain, is in grave danger once again, and she hasn’t even fully dealt with what Martin Laurent did to her and Sharon yet. It’s a blood-chilling development that adds yet another twist to the Matt Clark saga. Agree or disagree? Let us know in the comments.
