Traci and Jack Confront Patty — While Diane Wakes Up in a Strange House Under Mysterious Circumstances
At the Abbott mansion, Jack anxiously paces the room until Kyle joins him. Neither man has seen Diane since returning from Maryland. The private investigator Jack hired has come up empty as well. Together, they decide it’s time to involve the GCPD.
When Detective Burrow arrives, Jack immediately explains that his wife was probably taken by a “dangerous lunatic” and notes that Patty has a history of pulling stunts like this. Burrow asks whether Diane may have simply left on her own. Jack and Kyle insist she wouldn’t just disappear and abandon her work. After the detective leaves, Kyle reminds his father that Diane once staged her own death. Jack remains convinced his wife didn’t vanish voluntarily. In his mind, Patty is behind this.
Jack and Traci Demand Answers
At the outdoor café, Patty meets with a man named Laurence, who assures her that their plan has succeeded. After Patty hands over his payment, Traci arrives. Spotting them together, she quickly calls Jack. As she approaches, Laurence makes a hasty exit. The confrontation between the women escalates immediately. Patty acts remorseful, but Traci refuses to believe her. She questions Patty about the man, and Patty claims he was the doctor who approved her release. Traci refuses to believe any legitimate doctor would turn her loose on society. Tensions rise further when Traci reminds Patty that she murdered her child.
Jack eventually arrives and demands to know where Diane is. Patty suggests Diane probably ran off again and advises him to move on. Jack tells her she’s delusional if she thinks he would ever choose her. When he warns that the police have already been contacted, Patty replies that he won’t be getting the answers he expects. Jack promises to have her sent back to an institution.
Patty’s Update
Back at the Abbott mansion, Jack and Traci learn that Laurence operated the clinic where Patty was being treated. After Traci steps away to answer a phone call, Patty shows up. Jack allows her inside but refuses to offer her a drink. Following some taunting, Patty produces a photo of Diane asleep. Jack immediately demands an explanation.
Patty claims Diane fell apart after losing him and is now receiving the help she desperately needs. Referring to Diane as a “crazy woman,” Patty says that’s exactly why she had her placed in treatment. She urges Jack to trust the professionals. It could take years for Diane to recover. And even if she does, she’ll never be the same person again. The woman Jack married is gone.
Demented Diane?
In an unfamiliar house, Diane wakes up and instantly assumes Patty is responsible. The doors are locked, and the bookshelves are filled with books written by Alan Laurent. She attempts to pick a lock using a letter opener until Laurence appears. As she points it toward him, he calmly tells her to settle down.
He explains that the house belongs to him. As a psychiatrist, he says he must evaluate her before deciding where she should be sent.
Diane is completely bewildered and demands her freedom. Laurence repeats that he needs to assess her condition. He claims he found her screaming on a rural road. He then lies, saying he contacted both Jack and the police, and that Jack believed she had suffered a breakdown and requested treatment for her. Diane cannot remember any of it.
The Final Scenes
At the Abbott mansion, Jack tries persuading Patty to let him see Diane. Patty says she knows he’s frustrated and close to exploding, but advises him to stay calm. He needs to accept that Diane is no longer an option. Instead, he should “choose” her.
“You wouldn’t want anything unexpected to happen to Diane, would you?” she warns.
Jack insists the entire situation is insane and refuses to be blackmailed. Patty argues that everything has come full circle. It’s “kismet.” The universe wants them together so they can rediscover the “magic” they once shared.
Back at the strange house, Laurence tells Diane that she experienced a breakdown and is hiding behind denial to avoid facing her pain. He is surprised when she appears to agree and asks him to transfer her to a legitimate treatment facility. “Please let me go, right now!” she begs.
