General Hospital is officially moving away from its long-running ties to the mob. First, Jason packed away his seemingly endless collection of black T-shirts and informed Sonny that he was stepping down as his enforcer because he didn’t want to put his children through any more trauma. (A little late for that, but okay.) Now Sonny has announced that he, too, is leaving “the business.” There’s just one major problem with that decision.
There’s No Such Thing as Walking Away
For years, Sonny and Jason have insisted they simply couldn’t leave the Mafia. According to them, their noble presence was essential to maintaining peace in Port Charles (since the PCPD certainly wasn’t up to the job!). Beyond that, the pair have always argued that saying, “I’m out,” wouldn’t magically convince rival mobsters to leave them alone. Their enemies would still be more than happy to retaliate by targeting the people they love. In fact, they’d probably enjoy it.
So what has actually changed? On the surface, absolutely nothing. Selina Wu, Joey Novak and everyone else waiting in the wings would be expected to move onto Sonny’s territory before you could even say “land grab.” And who exactly would be left to stop them? No one.
Is Sonny Putting a Target on His Own Back?
Even more concerning—at least in theory—is that Sonny and Jason may be placing both themselves and their families in even greater danger by essentially announcing, “We’re no longer made men, so come after us.” Someone like Sidwell would hardly hesitate to take advantage of their retirement and send them sleeping with the fishes.
So what do you think? There’s no doubt Sonny could take on plenty of other roles in Port Charles. But does it really make sense for him to believe it would suddenly be safe to do so? Wouldn’t Michael, Carly, Kristina, Donna, Dante and the rest of his family instantly become even bigger targets?
