And with that, it appears *General Hospital* has brought Jason’s life in the mob to a close—for the time being, at least. We never expected Sonny to celebrate Jason’s decision to walk away from that world, but we also never believed he would try to stop him.
The two men have been friends for decades, and their bond has always been built on mutual trust, loyalty and respect. Sonny has no reason to worry that Jason would ever turn against him. Jason isn’t some ordinary enforcer trying to quit after learning too many secrets.
So Sonny responded exactly as many expected: he gave Jason his blessing to leave. During their conversation, Sonny reminded him that they had both talked not long ago about getting out of the business. At the time, Sonny felt there wasn’t much reason anymore, especially with Cullum and Sidwell gone. But now that Jason has truly walked away, could Sonny begin rethinking things himself?
The two have always respected each other’s opinions, and Sonny clearly understands why Jason wants to leave for Danny’s sake. What if that conversation plants a seed and Sonny starts wondering whether he should do the same? His circumstances may not be identical, but no one understands better than Sonny the toll his “work” has taken on his family. He has considered leaving before, yet never quite—pun intended—pulled the trigger the way Jason finally has. But could this time be different?
There’s also Sonny’s growing relationship with Justine to consider, along with the reality that he no longer has a trusted right-hand man. He doesn’t have an enforcer anymore. Jason is gone, Ethan has skipped town, and Sonny’s inner circle now seems to consist of little more than Ric and Brick. (There’s probably a joke in there somewhere.)
What upcoming spoilers do reveal is that Sonny is preparing to make a shocking announcement this Thursday. While viewers have heard talk of Sonny leaving this life before, the timing now feels as though it could genuinely be right for him to step away and hand over his empire to someone else.
