At the Club, Stephanie is happy that Nate reached out to meet her for lunch. They banter, and he jokes that there’s a lounge downstairs with a dance floor. The conversation turns to Holden, and Nate senses something is… strange. She admits she’s worried about how to tell her son that she lied about them.
Nate wonders if Steph feels she needs to tell Holden that things have progressed. Not wanting to make things more complicated, she suggests they drop the subject. Nate takes her hand. He doesn’t think they should drop it. Stephanie admits she feels she misled Holden when she told him they were friends. If this continues, she’ll have to tell him the truth… and she’s nervous. They pretend to be each of them telling Holden the news until Stephanie finally smiles. Nate wants to make sure Holden is comfortable with him being part of her life.
Claire’s Creeping Fear
At the tack house, Victoria texts Kyle that she’s available. He responds that he needs thirty minutes and will be leading the “meeting” this time. As Victoria smiles at her phone, Claire walks in. “What’s got you in such a good mood?” Victoria says it was a funny meme, but refuses to show her.
The conversation turns to Nick, and Victoria admits she’s concerned that the pressure of work could drive him back to pills. Claire urges her mother to trust her brother. Victoria thanks her for the perspective. The blonde receives a text, and her expression drops. “She’s back. Aunt Jordan strikes again.”
Claire explains that she had an alert on her phone for her late aunt’s birthday. Victoria says she should have deleted it. They discuss Claire’s history with Jordan, and Claire says, “I was a really awful person back then.” Victoria reminds her that she was a child. Claire worries that something dark from her past could always creep back in. (Like, if she found out her mom was sleeping with her ex?!)claire yr
Victoria gives Claire a pep talk and suggests that they spend some time together. They decide to go to lunch. When Victoria receives a text from Kyle asking her to meet him now, she tells Claire she had another meeting, but she’ll cancel it. Claire insists that she go ahead. Victoria, however, texts Kyle back that something has come up with Claire.
Slick Nick
At Crimson Lights, Nick has his hair slicked back and is handling business on the phone when Phyllis arrives. He asks whether she convinced Matt to stay in town. She tries to avoid the question, but Nick won’t let her. Phyllis claims he has left town. Nick admits he seemed different, but he doesn’t want him anywhere near the family. “Why are you working so damn hard to be attached to this guy?” Phyllis repeats that it’s over and he’s gone.
They sit down to argue some more about Matt Clark, and Nick complains about Phyllis’ impulsive decisions. Phyllis insists Nick doesn’t need to save her; she knows what she’s doing. Nick sighs that nobody needs a hero. Phyllis simply doesn’t believe Matt is a monster. He deserves the chance to change his life. Nick asks why she cares so much… is she planning to use Clark for her own personal gain?
Can’t Quit You
At Society, Matt is having one last drink for the road and tells himself he’s not stalling. It’s simply hard to leave this town. He flashes back to connecting with Phyllis, her hitting him over the head, and the rest of their journey. His phone dings. It’s Patty asking where he is… it’s time to hit the road. He gets up to leave, but more memories of Phyllis come back, so he texts Patty to wait.
Still at Crimson Lights, Phyllis says Matt left with Patty, so it doesn’t matter. Nick urges her to concentrate on her new company. Phyllis snaps, “Maybe I don’t want to do it alone.” Nick thinks she has lost her head. Phyllis tears up when he says he’ll never let anyone hurt her. Maybe she got caught up, but Matt was her biggest champion. He didn’t ostracize her. Nick did. So do her kids. Nick is sorry. But the terrible things Matt has done can never be erased. Just then, her phone rings… it’s Matt.
Nick tells Phyllis not to answer the call, but she does. He rolls his eyes as she asks Clark, “Where are you?”
The Final Scenes
At the Club, Stephanie tells Nate they should leave it alone for now. Holden is on his way to London to visit Malcolm, which gives them time to work things out.
At Crimson Lights, Kyle spots Nick and asks how he’s doing. He says he’s great, and the conversation turns to Vibrante. Nick is glad they didn’t engage in the social media battle. Jabot has a clear advantage. Besides, Nick is sure Victoria wouldn’t give Kyle the time of day.
At the tack house, Claire tells Victoria that she’s so busy looking after everyone else and should try being a little more selfish sometimes. Victoria reads Kyle’s disappointed text and then they head off.
At Society, Matt tells Phyllis over the phone that he needs to see her. She asks if Patty hurt him. He says he’s fine. She asks, “What’s going on? What kind of game are you playing?”
