Something rather unexpected happened to EJ during Thursday’s episode of Days of Our Lives. The moment he discovered that Xander and Philip had managed to pay off an entire year’s worth of their loan, he immediately put Rita to work finding out where the money came from. Then, without wasting any time, he stormed into Gabi’s office, furious and ready to confront her until he was practically red in the face. But anger wasn’t the only reason EJ looked flushed during that confrontation.
Right in the middle of yelling at Gabi, EJ was suddenly overcome by a sneezing fit! Naturally, that left plenty of viewers (along with us) wondering what on earth had just happened.
Was it actually EJ sneezing, or was it actor Dan Feuerriegel accidentally sneezing while filming the scene? If it was the latter, then full credit goes to both him and Cherie Jimenez for staying completely in character and seamlessly working through the moment. If the exchange was improvised on the spot, they handled it brilliantly.
On the other hand, if the sneezing was intentional and part of EJ’s storyline, then the obvious question becomes: Why? What could have triggered such a sudden sneezing attack? Gabi’s office was filled with flowers, so perhaps EJ was simply dealing with allergies. Still, it feels like there must be a bigger reason than the writers simply adding a touch of realism to the scene. So... what’s really going on?
Could EJ be under so much pressure that he’s beginning to come down with an illness that turns out to be far more serious than an ordinary cold?
Or perhaps he’s finally starting to crack, with the sneezing acting as an involuntary “tell” whenever he isn’t being truthful. In this case, that would mean he was lying about stealing Gabi’s bags! (Then again, Gabi may once again be jumping to conclusions that ultimately prove incorrect.)
Another interesting theory comes from Reddit user u/sodascouts on the Days of Our Lives subreddit.
“I’m thinking he’s allergic to the bag,” the user suggested, “and it’s going to give him away as the thief.”
That would certainly make for a clever twist, but how exactly would it prove anything? Would someone remember EJ’s sudden sneezing fit and connect it to Gabi’s bag, finally giving her the evidence she’s been looking for? After all, the bag was sitting right on her desk when EJ barged into the office. Yet he didn’t seem to have any allergic reaction when Gabi practically shoved it in his face.
Could something as simple as a sneeze ultimately be what brings EJ—and all of his schemes—crashing down? That would certainly be one unforgettable downfall!
